Character Appreciation Time!! This sexy boy is the main character of Saiyuki by Kazuya Minekura. Pick it up. Read it.
Name: Genjyo Sanzo (birth name Kouryuu)
Age: 25, birthday November 29th
Weapons: Maten Sutra (holy magic), Smith & Wesson M36
Occupation: Buddhist priest, demon slayer, leader of the Sanzo gang
Likes: green tea, silence, white rice, cigarettes, alcohol
Dislikes: morons, the rain, when they’re stuck out in the middle of nowhere and he runs out of cigarettes, physical contact, that emotional crap
Personality: He might be a Buddhist priest, but he sure as hell doesn’t act like one. He drinks like a fish and smokes like a chimney. He’s foul-mouthed, quick to anger and violence, and generally doesn’t give two shits about you or your problems. He follows his own path in life and will shoot down anyone in his way. He has deep bonds with his teammates, however, and would kill for them without hesitation. He prefers the simple things-like reading the newspaper on a hot summer day, or drinking green tea and white rice. People generally annoy him. He doesn’t want to be alone, though, he just wants to be left alone.
Back story: Rescued as a baby and raised by the previous Sanzo, his father figure Koumyou, he was always known even as a child for his maturity and how his eyes burned with an inner light, ‘like a demon out of hell’. A demon attacked the temple where he lived when he was still a child, and his mentor died saving him. It was raining when this happened, which is why Sanzo hates the rain so much. Sanzo inherited the title of high priest, given only by the gods, and left the temple on his own. He learned what the real world was like pretty quickly, which is why he’s so cynical today, and so decided to live by Muichimotsu-his late master’s teaching. Muichimotsu states that, “Bound by nothing, free of all, you live your life simply as it is.” At first he thought this meant having no attachments to anyone or anything, but he rethinks its meaning later on in the series, after having met his three companions, Goku, Gojyo, and Hakkai. Despite being a Buddhist priest he doesn’t follow the Buddhist religion.
Why I Like Sanzo: Sanzo is one of my favorite anime/manga characters of all time (though, let’s face it people, don’t watch the anime. Read the manga. Big difference.) The reason for this is mainly because of his strength and his refusal to ever let the world get the best of him. His was a loss of innocence. He was thrown out into the world before he was ready for the cruelty it holds, and it changed him. After seriously considering suicide when he was younger, he decided instead to keep going forward, no matter what. He might be an asshole at the best of times, but he would do anything for the ones he cares about, particularly his adoptive son Goku. He is a natural leader and shows his support for his teammates in unexpected but still heartfelt ways, like when he sang a prayer for Hakkai’s fallen sister or when he held a terrified Goku when the little boy thought he’d been abandoned. He loves them but you’d never get him to admit it. The manga (NOT the anime) is my favorite one of all time. Hands down, and Sanzo is a big part of that.
